Marriage Continuity Certificate in Qatar: Requirements, Online Application, and Proof of Marriage

If a government department, employer or embassy asks you to prove that your marriage continues, the right document matters. In Qatar, a marriage continuity certificate is not simply another name for the original marriage contract, and some applications involve a prior judicial decision.

This guide explains how to identify the right certificate, prepare the record and use the Supreme Judiciary Council's documentation services. Start with our Marriage and Family Documents in Qatar guide if you need the wider picture.

Official document

The Supreme Judiciary Council lists a service for إصدار شهادة استمرار الزوجية within Family Documentation.

Legal basis

Article 10 of Qatar Family Law No. 22 of 2006 addresses proof of marriage by official contract and exceptional court-assessed evidence.

Verify the route

A missing or insufficiently documented marriage contract may make a final judicial judgment or decision essential.

What does a marriage continuity certificate prove?

A marriage contract documents the formation of a marriage. A continuity certificate addresses the continued marital relationship on a specified documentary or judicial basis. It should not be described as a universal certificate automatically available to every married person, regardless of how their marriage is recorded.

The Supreme Judiciary Council's published service descriptions explicitly identify issuance of a marriage continuity certificate for cases where a marriage contract is absent or the existing contract is not properly documented or certified, after a final judicial judgment or decision. The applicant must verify which pathway applies to the actual marriage record.

Marriage continuity certificate vs. marriage contract and other documents

Marriage contract or certificate

Records the marriage itself and normally establishes the marriage when properly issued and documented.

Best used when: When a receiving authority asks for proof of the original marriage or its date.

Marriage continuity certificate

Addresses continuing marital status in the circumstances covered by the SJC Family Documentation service; its precise basis should be checked before applying.

Best used when: When the recipient asks specifically for evidence of ongoing marriage, or the SJC service is appropriate to the underlying record.

Foreign marriage contract attestation

Authenticates or enables recognition of a marriage document issued abroad; it is a different service from confirmation of continuity.

Best used when: When the marriage took place outside Qatar and the foreign document needs to be used in Qatar.

Non-marriage or single-status proof

Concerns the absence of a currently recorded marriage, not its continuation.

Best used when: When the applicant must show that they are not currently married.

For original contract requirements see Marriage Contract in Qatar. For the authentication chain, consult Marriage Certificate Attestation in Qatar.

The legal foundation: Article 10 of Qatar Family Law

Under Article 10 of Law No. 22 of 2006, marriage is established by an official contract drawn up according to law; exceptionally, a judge may accept evidence to establish marriage in circumstances the judge assesses. This rule explains why the treatment of a missing contract differs from an ordinary request for a copy of a registered marriage document.

Where marriage itself has not been formally established or the paperwork is insufficient, determine whether a competent court must first issue a final decision. A witness letter, private declaration or translated certificate cannot be assumed to have the same legal effect as the judicial act required for a specific service.

Documents to prepare before applying

Qatar ID details and passports for the spouses, with consistent Arabic and English names

Existing marriage contract or certificate, if available, and its registration number, date and issuing authority

If the marriage occurred abroad, the foreign certificate and the authentication or translation already obtained

A final judicial judgment or decision and proof of finality, if the SJC service requires it for an undocumented or insufficiently documented marriage

Earlier family-documentation references or official correspondence if the marriage record has already been reviewed

The receiving authority's letter or checklist explaining why evidence of continuing marriage is required

An authorization or power of attorney where someone else applies and the service permits representation

These are preparation items, not a claim that every applicant must submit every item. Requirements depend on the available service and the legal history of the marriage.

How to request a marriage continuity certificate in Qatar

01

Check which certificate the recipient needs

Ask whether it accepts the original marriage contract, requires a newly issued marital-status confirmation, or specifies the SJC marriage continuity certificate. Ask how recent the evidence must be.

02

Identify the state of the marriage record

Is there a Qatar-issued contract, a foreign certificate, an unregistered marriage, or an earlier final court decision? This determines whether an attestation, record correction or judicial step must come first.

03

Open the SJC electronic services portal

Sign in to the official portal and locate the currently available Family Documentation marriage/certificate service. The service name, account eligibility and visible fields may change.

04

Review eligibility before submitting

The SJC has specifically described a marriage-continuity service concerning cases without a contract or with a contract that lacks the necessary documentation or certification, following a final judicial ruling or decision. If that describes your situation, confirm the exact judicial document required.

05

Enter the record details and upload evidence

Use the exact spelling and identifying details shown on the official documents. Upload only the attachments the live form requests; do not guess a marriage registration number.

06

Submit, track and answer requests

Save the reference number, check notifications and respond to requests for another document, corrected data or a court record. Follow the payment screen if a fee is actually shown; do not assume a fixed price.

07

Inspect the issued document

Check both spouses' identities, the marriage date or reference, the certificate's wording, issue date and any verification code. Fix inaccuracies before using it for a second transaction.

08

Prepare the document for its destination

For overseas use, ask the receiving authority about MOFA attestation, consular legalization and certified translation. For a Qatar-side transaction, confirm whether the authority can verify the record electronically.

Use the SJC electronic services portal to check current steps, account access and any fees. A particular screen or processing time may change, so avoid relying on screenshots from earlier applications.

Special cases: foreign marriages, missing contracts and changed status

The marriage took place in Qatar

If there is already a properly documented marriage contract, find out whether the authority really needs a continuity certificate or simply a valid copy or current status confirmation. The documents are not interchangeable by name alone.

The couple married abroad

A foreign marriage certificate may need legalization, translation or a separate SJC attestation of the overseas contract. That step is not automatically the same as issuing a certificate of continued marriage.

There is no official marriage contract

Article 10 allows proof of marriage by evidence in exceptional cases assessed by a judge. Where the SJC continuity service requires a final judgment or decision, a private statement or affidavit cannot replace it.

The record is incomplete or inconsistent

First resolve conflicting dates, spelling, nationality details or missing authentication with the competent authority. Submitting repeated certificate requests will not necessarily correct the underlying record.

The spouses are separated or a divorce has occurred

Living apart does not by itself answer the legal-status question. If divorce or another dissolution has legally taken effect, do not request proof that the marriage continues; establish the correct present status and obtain the corresponding document.

The certificate is for a foreign embassy

Confirm whether the embassy wants evidence of a current marital relationship, the original marriage contract, proof of registration or a consular certificate. The destination country determines the acceptable format and age.

Where the certificate is used and what to check

Requests may arise in family-related government files, employment benefits, housing applications, embassy procedures or an overseas civil-status application. Each recipient can ask for different evidence. Before applying, obtain written confirmation of the exact document name, acceptable issue date, whether an original or verified digital copy is required, and any Arabic or English translation needs.

For use outside Qatar, first confirm the requirements of the foreign authority. Qatar MOFA authentication or further consular legalization may be required, but the correct chain depends on the destination and document type. The related marriage certificate attestation guide explains the general approach to legalizing family documents.

Common application mistakes to avoid

Treating a marriage continuity certificate as a reprint of any marriage contract

Assuming an overseas marriage certificate is already registered with the SJC because it carries a MOFA stamp

Skipping a required final judicial judgment in a case involving an undocumented marriage

Guessing contract numbers or dates instead of checking official records

Using the wrong kind of certificate for housing, employment, embassy or other receiving-authority requirements

Paying for translation and legalization before confirming the destination authority's requirements

Assuming a standard fee, fixed processing time or universal expiry date without checking the live service

If the underlying family record is incorrect, ask the competent authority how to correct it before requesting new certificates. Repeated applications do not cure an unresolved documentation defect.

Frequently asked questions about marriage continuity certificates in Qatar

What is a marriage continuity certificate in Qatar?

It is a Family Documentation certificate associated with confirming or establishing the continuation of a marital relationship in the circumstances recognized by the Supreme Judiciary Council. It is not automatically the same as the original marriage contract or a general marital-status statement.

Can I get a marriage continuity certificate online in Qatar?

The Supreme Judiciary Council provides electronic Family Documentation services through eservices.sjc.gov.qa. Check the live marriage/certificate service after signing in to confirm eligibility, required attachments and the submission route for your particular record.

Is a marriage continuity certificate the same as a marriage certificate?

No. The marriage contract ordinarily records the original marriage, while a continuity certificate concerns the continued marital relationship and the documentary basis accepted for the service. Ask the receiving authority which document it needs.

Do I need a court judgment for a marriage continuity certificate?

Not every request should be assumed identical. In its service description, the SJC expressly refers to cases with no contract or an insufficiently documented or certified contract, with the certificate issued following a final judicial judgment or decision. Confirm whether this applies to your case before filing.

What if I was married outside Qatar?

Check whether the foreign marriage contract must first be authenticated or attested for use in Qatar. The SJC also describes a separate service for attesting contracts concluded abroad. Do not assume that obtaining a MOFA stamp automatically completes SJC marriage-documentation requirements.

What documents are needed to apply?

Typically you should have identification, the existing marriage record if any, relevant foreign attestations, and any court decision required by your circumstances. The live SJC form, rather than a general online checklist, determines the documents you must actually submit.

How much does the certificate cost and how long is it valid?

There is no single fee or validity period stated here because the applicable service, charges and recipient's recency requirements must be confirmed directly. Review the SJC fee screen and ask the receiving authority how recently the certificate must have been issued.

Can I use the certificate abroad?

Possibly, after checking the foreign recipient's requirements. Depending on the country, the certificate may need Qatar MOFA attestation, embassy or consular legalization, or a certified translation.

Can separated or divorced spouses request proof of continuing marriage?

The certificate must reflect the actual legal status. Living apart does not necessarily terminate marriage, but a legally effective divorce or dissolution changes the documentation required. Where the status is disputed, the legal record should be resolved before applying.

Official Qatar sources

The legal basis and the SJC's published service description are the starting points. Always verify live application requirements with the authority handling your request.
